Cultural Protocols

Cultural heritage is not merely “user content.” Where materials relate to Indigenous Peoples, Tribal Nations, Native Hawaiian organizations, or other community knowledge holders, additional duties apply beyond copyright.

We align practice with Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), UNDRIP principles where applicable, and community-defined access rules. Platform convenience never overrides community veto.

• Uploaders of culturally sensitive material must affirm they have documented Free, Prior, and Informed Consent from the appropriate governing body or knowledge keepers
• Consent may be time-limited, purpose-limited, and revocable
• Select license type Traditional Knowledge (TK) or Community Restricted when publishing such materials
• False claims of consent are grounds for immediate removal and account sanctions

• Do not publish precise coordinates, rituals, or restricted ceremonial knowledge without authorization
• Geofenced or role-gated experiences must honor access lists defined with community partners
• AR activations on or near sacred sites require written partnership protocols before go-live
• We will disable public indexing of materials flagged as sacred-site sensitive

TK and community-restricted licenses default to: no remix, attribution required, no commercial use, and culturally restricted access. Downstream APIs must refuse public redistribution of such assets without an active consent record.

Benefit-sharing, language rights, and attribution to Nations or knowledge keepers must follow the terms of the governing partnership agreement.

Community authorities and knowledge keepers may request expedited removal of cultural materials even when copyright ownership is disputed.
